We were planning to shoot for a while now, and I had this idea of getting the photos to look as close to an actual live performance as possible. I knew Marcelo had a gig coming up but I didn’t want to worry about the lighting or the background being too cluttered. And I wanted to get close since I wasn’t only after photos of him performing but portraits. Also, taking a medium format camera to a club isn’t something I would even consider. So instead I opted for a rehearsal session at his studio. I brought my trusted set of studio strobes with a palette of color gels and some protection for my ears. I believe I can spot if a musician is only pretending to perform his or her art, and as I said, I wanted this to look and feel as real as possible.
